4 out of 5 stars GREAT TONE... FOR A WHILE   July 19, 2008
Richard L. Holloway (wisconsin usa)
jj's have a very distinctive, and i would say, wonderful, musical tone to them. they sound the best of any i have purchased (i have a mesa/boogie head). big problem: they developed microphonics and popping after about nine months. i am a working musician, but don't tax my amp too much. so, durability is the biggest problem. but oh, that tone. heaven, for a while.

4 out of 5 stars Solid tone - great value   April 22, 2008

JJ 12AX7 are a great value for the price. If you want a brighter sound out of a dark amp (tweed Fender, Marshall) these are the cure. If you already have a bright amp (blackface Fender, VOX)these are not recommended, they bring out the higher frequencies and tend to sound a bit harsh in these types of amps. For brighter amps I recommend the Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7, these have a warm, round, and full tone, perfect for an overly bright amp.

The only drawback to the JJ's is they are not as sturdy and long lasting as the Russian made brands (Sovtek, Electro Harmonix, etc.) but have a much richer sound without the muddiness associated with the Russian types. They tend to become microphonic after a while in combo amps which makes them a better choice in stand alone head units. All in all, a great economical tube with a solid bright tone.

I ordered 6 12AX7s for my Boogie combo and they were shipped quickly and securely. I also saved a nice bit of money through Amazon/Part-Express. Tone-wise, they're new JJ tubes, I'm not going to get into their sound, if you're looking for durable, toneful tubes, you can't go wrong.

One thing to note is that the glass nubbin on the top of tube is slightly longer than most Sovtek/Tung-Sol 12AX7s, so if you have a clamping tube system that comes into direct contact with the tip of the tube, it may be a bit more snug than you're comfortable with, but that shouldn't be an issue for most people.
