Overheated; melted trays! September 6, 2010 T. Russ (nc) I bought this unit last fall based on the positive reviews on Amazon.com. Worked great the first 12 times we used it. Loved the adjustable temperature settings. Dried tomatoes, herbs, peppers, and made jerky. Then something went terribly wrong. I tried to dry some basil and thyme at the lowest setting. After an hour, I checked the trays. They were really, really hot! So hot, in fact, that the upper trays had melted, and the lower trays were slightly misshapen from the extreme heat. Must've been a malfunction in the thermostat; but very scary (could've caused a fire, I imagine). Wondering if anyone else has had this issue? Now I am afraid to use it (besides, the trays don't really fit together anymore). Very disappointing. Hope it was just a lemon and not a reflection on the product line.
Dependable September 5, 2010 Sprint100 This machine is great considering the price. We've had this going for days at a time dehydrating foods and it is still going strong.
Nesco FC-75PR 700 Watt Food Dehydrator September 3, 2010 Idaho Gal We bought this to give as a gift. The person is thrilled with the way it works. When our old dehydrator dies we will buy this one for ourselves.
Poor design - didn't work for me August 27, 2010 Piano Instructor (OH USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've used a dehydrator for years to dry herbs from my garden which I use all year long. I like the idea of drying them at a lower temperature. The colors shouldn't darken.
This was not my experience. I cut fresh sweet basil from my garden to dehydrate. I layed them in a single layer and set the dryer to 95º. Two days later, they were wilted, but not in the least bit dried. I hiked the temperature to 105º and let it continue drying. Mind you, the unit was operating 24/7. After five more days, the leaves were still not dry; some of them were still just wilted, especially the ones in the bottom trays where there were fewer leaves. I turned the unit up again, this time to 155º. After another 4 days, I checked them. The leaves should crumble when dried. The leaves are still flexible - kind of like paper leather.
I called Nesco and explained my dilemma. They suggested I return it. She said the basil should have dried in 24 hours.
That wasn't my experience. I would not recommend this unit. I don't like the heating unit on the top. Everyone knows that heat rises. Maybe that's part of the problem. The moisture certainly didn't leave the unit when it was in operation 24/7 for 11 days.
My original unit was a Magic Chef from Walmart. I liked the unit because the heater and the fan were in the bottom. The trays were adjustable to different heights. The unit would dry herbs within 24 hours. I wish I could get another one like that.
I THINK TERI JOHNSON WOULD LOVE THIS DEHYDRATOR! August 26, 2010 J. Hatcher (The Great USA) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I buy something I do a LOT of research, 'cause I absolutely despise both wasting money & of course those dang "Nat-Zees"... Trust me on this one folks, this is well worth every cent & perfoms as advertised! I made jerky using a basic recipe my crew dog Tom "I think I just pooped my pants 'cause I'm so dang old" Bolling gave me & it makes store-bought jerky taste like a dog turd wrapped in burnt hair... Seriously, you'll take one bite of perfectly cured/dried jerkey from this machine & think you just got done eating Rock's ma's calf muscle... It's just that good! Buy this dehydrator & amaze your friends when you bring in some dehydrated meat straight from gary Firestone's Brokeback Barn...
p.s. If you want a GREAT food dehydrator, look no further folks!

hATCh
