Amazon.com Filmed by a four month-old MTV and just days into the band's first number one album Escape, Journey is at their peak. The recent addition of FM-friendly keyboardist/co-songwriter Jonathan Cain (fresh from the Babys) proved to be the final addition that the constantly changing concept band would need to crash both radio and retail charts. The concert DVD shows rows of fans in the same red-sleeved concert jerseys getting their fill of the hits "Don't Stop Believin'," "Stone in Love," "Who's Crying Now," "Open Arms," "Anyway You Want It," "Wheel In The Sky," and "Lights." Stage-wise, there is very little in terms of visual style with the exception of a few rows of gel lights to move with the music and a pair of spotlights that move with unlikely idols Steve Perry and Neal Schon. In this day and age of MTV Video Music Awards and TRL it is difficult to understand how a band of thirty-somethings in hiked-up blue jeans easily delivered the ballads to break young girls' hearts and the glass-pack rock to fuel young boys' Firebirds. The second DVD consists of upbeat interviews from the same period, a cheap trinket slideshow, and an Escape promo reel from back when those sorts of things were commonplace on networks. The interviews capture an optimistic band in the most favorable light they'd ever been in or ever would be in again. If you're looking for the dirty laundry drama on the fantastic ups and downs in the story of Journey you'll have to look elsewhere. This one is a collector's item of simpler times--a moment when the world of Journey was magic and everything was all right for those who thought music television was an odd concept. --Peter Hilgendorf

Journey Live in Houston 1981 Escape Tour DVD & CD December 13, 2008 Neva This item was excellent. Good Quality all around. Both the DVD & CD were exactly what I wanted. I give it 5 stars and reccommend it to all Journey fans. Shipment was fast, easy and on time. I also reccommend making purchases at Amazon.com because they are the best and most reliable source.
Pretty Decent stuff! November 1, 2008 P. M. (Illinois) I don't think this is Steve Perry at his best, but if you're a Journey fan, you'll enjoy this concert. There are some songs that aren't well-known, but it's still a decent mix. The quality of the video is not too shabby for being filmed so long ago.
Great rock - great concert September 13, 2008 R. Steven Head (Hendersonville, TN) Great show - this catches rock music when the performers were real and the song genuine. This may not be to the liking of current pop music fans, but this is the way that rock music was meant to be performed in front of an audience. No dancers, no high tech special effects, just music. All five guys are great. Steve Perry is probably the best vocal performer in the rock genre, Neil Schon's guitar playing is astounding, Ross Valory provides incredible bass lines, Jonathon Cain with his keyboard performance, especially on "Dont Stop Belivin'", and Steve Smith's drums are simply great. This is a great buy - go for it.
good show September 11, 2008 shawn (usa) when I rate live concert videos the biggest thing I pay attention to is does the band sound live like they do on thier cd? not many do. but journey pulls it off nicely, and they were nuts for giving up steve perry cuz he is an awesome vocalist. And he hits most all the notes flawlessly in this concert. it's a good show too lots of energy.
this dvd is a disappointment August 30, 2008 Tim J. Weaver I was anticipating the energy and charisma of a Live Journey concert. I couldn't find it anywhere on the DVD. Every song on the DVD was performed at what seems 1 1/2 speed. It seems the band was trying to quickly get through the hits that the fans came to see. There is little to enjoy as the band seems to not be having a good time performing their songs together. Play Stone In Love or Who's Crying Now and see for yourself how quickly they go from the intro to the end. This DVD is disappointing. Although Steve Perry produced this DVD, in no way is this a 5 star DVD.
