As KISSology - Vol. 1 (1974-1977) announces loudly, all the chutzpah and bombast that made KISS so huge--the fire-breathing, the blood-dripping, the kabuki-mask make-up and platform shoes, the synchronized head-bobs--were in place from the very beginning. KISS's 1974 concert in San Francisco is virtually identical to their 1977 concerts in Japan and Houston, at the peak of their popularity. For hardcore fans, this opportunity to bask in the nuances of five performances of "Black Diamond" and six performances of "Firehouse" is essential viewing, but for the less committed the pleasures of KISSology lie in the bizarre collisions pop culture is heir to: Gene Simmons, in full costume, declaring himself "evil incarnate" on The Mike Douglas Show; Margaret Hamilton, done up in her Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch of the West garb, introducing KISS to the ever-cackling Paul Lynde on Lynde's 1976 Halloween special (the footage from this special doesn't include the tender ballad "Beth", undoubtedly due to the estrangement of drummer Peter Criss, who sang the band's highest charting U.S. single); and the truly surreal incident where KISS went to Cadillac, Michigan, and had breakfast with the entire city council wearing full KISS makeup before the band made a spectacular exit by helicopter. Rock & roll is full of strange phenomena, but KISS is one of the most inexplicable: An adolescent fever dream of superheroic hedonism that somehow achieved world-wide stardom and kept its career alive for over 30 years. KISS started as a deliberate cartoon, became a bad joke, and have re-emerged as a fond memory, still cranking out pyrotechnic spectacle. Three volumes of KISSology is probably excessive, but why stop the excess now? --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection   December 21, 2008

Good Collection. Could have been more, but we all know that before they ever released it. Kiss is Kiss.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but coulda been better   November 26, 2008

I was a Kiss fan in the 70's, so I go way back. The problem I had with this DVD is that it is all concert footage. I like to see documentary type stuff also. Backstage stuff, interviews, background, new insights. You get none of that here. Just several hours of concert footage. Good DVD, but not great.

I disagree that in the 1980's kiss was washed out. they had a rough patch in 1980-82 then after 'lick it up' in 1983 they were very, very popular. right through the 1980's they had sellout tours and sold millions of new discs. they weren't as huge as the 70's but they were still a top rock band. Of course their heyday was the 1970's when they were the top selling band in the world. And this boxset does showcase this very nicely. With excellent footage and great concerts to see. Kiss is one of the best rock bands that there ever was or will ever be. And in the 1990's they were close to what they were in the 70's. I remember going by a college in 1998 and seeing a bunch of college kids dressed up as them and even a college music store with full model outfits in the big glass window display. Then unwisely the band never released another cd of truly songs or new material. This was a huge mistake. However I work in school districts and to this day they seem to be attracting new fans, but many other kids think they are gone because the band foolishly won't release any new songs or a new disc. this is Very foolish indeed.
However I would recommend this dvd set or any of the other kissology sets to anyone who loves great hard rock or just wants to watch a great rock show.

4 out of 5 stars What?: - No "Rocket Ride"?   July 5, 2008
Dean (Newport Beach CA)
10 DVD discs and not a single version of 'Rocket Ride" - This is why I only gave it 4 stars:

And I now own all of the box sets I cannot believe that 'Rocket Ride' is not included on any of them especially after Ace Frehley was such an influence on them and that they decided to honor him and Peter Criss in such ways but I noticed in the liner notes by Paul Stanley said that Criss basically tried his darndest to make everyone feel miserable during the final tour. I don't really know if that is true or not but Simmons and Stanley are after all 'marketing geniuses' and could have just said this in order to sell more copies.

"Rocket Ride" is a song by the American hard rock band Kiss originally featured on their 1977 album Alive II. A studio recording written by Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and Sean Delaney, it was the first Kiss single to feature Frehley on lead vocals, and peaked at #39 on the American Billboard Hot 100 [1], making it the band's seventh US Top 40 hit.

"Rocket Ride" proved to be the only studio track of the five recorded for Alive II that Frehley would perform on, as Bob Kulick was brought into perform on some of the other tracks. Ace noted in the booklet for the Kiss Box Set, released in 2001, that this was the first vocal performance that he was satisfied with.

Ace Frehley's 2008 tour in support of his unnamed unreleased album is named after this song, The Rocket Ride Tour

I gave KISSology to my husband for Christmas and he has watched several times. He has said to me that it was more than what he expected. He is very happy with it.
