Album Description
Two CD set includes two DVDs and booklet. David Gilmour Live in the Gdansk Shipyard with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. This is the first solo live album from Pink Floyd's singer / guitarist, and it captures the magic of his concert held in front of 50,000 people as the final performance of his critically acclaimed 2006 `On An Island Tour.' It features the first ever recording of selected Pink Floyd classics performed with an orchestra. Produced by David Gilmour and Phil Manzanera. It is the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd's `High Hopes' and `A Great Day For Freedom,' the latter performed here as a one off for this special Solidarity anniversary. Playing at this historic concert is Richard Wright - Pink Floyd's keyboard player, Phil Manzanera, Roxy Music guitarist & coproducer of 'On An Island', Guy Pratt -bass player with Pink Floyd & Roxy Music Jon Carin -keyboards & longtime player with Pink Floyd, Steve Di Stanislao - drums, recently with Crosby and Nash, Dick Parry -saxophone and longtime Pink Floyd collaborator.

3 out of 5 stars Half & Half   November 18, 2008

I'd love to say that this CD/DVD is great, but I can only really go halfway. That's because roughly half of the material on it is from David's latest studio release "On An Island", which, to me, is the musical equivalent of a good sleeping pill. The Pink Floyd material, such as "Astronomy Domine", "Fat Old Sun", "Echoes", and "A Great Day For Freedom", are wonderful, however, the selections from "On An Island", are incredibly BORING. It's as simple as that.

5 out of 5 stars Killer!!!   November 17, 2008

This is a MUST for any Pink Floyd / David Gilmour fan. Some of the last DVD glimpses of Rick Wright. Great sound quality and picture on both the CD and DVD. I know there is a five disk set out there...and am curious to see if it's better or has more songs? This four disk set is great and you can't beat the price.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Gdansk   November 16, 2008

I am a rabid Floyd fan, but as yet have been unable to get very excited about Gilmour solo work. I loved the historical significance of Waters' Berlin Wall performance, so I ordered the Live in Gdansk 2 CD/2 DVD edition for the same reason. I have had it for a month now, and I haven't listened to or viewed anything else. The CDs are filled with a perfect mix of some the best classic Floyd tunes as well as Gilmour's newer material. Disc 3 is excellent, but the real treasure is disc 4. I am always amazed when I hear the various components of Pink Floyd music coming together, but it's even more amazing to actually see it. The highlights are Gilmour's slide guitar artistry on High Hopes, as well as the Barn Jam session, where he takes a turn on the drums. What a musician! I loaned it out, and disc 3 was damaged, so I'm seriously considering springing for the $115 edition. It's that good!

4 out of 5 stars Great live recording. The excessive versions are confusing, though.   November 16, 2008

I have been a David Gilmour fan for a long time. Got into Pink Floyd back in the late 70's not long after he put out his first solo album (which is now 30 years old as I write this). Followed him through all the years of Floyd, his solo albums, and all that. When I heard he was putting out a live album, I wasn't terribly sure I was going to get it. Live albums are a mixed bag with me. If you saw the tour a live album came from, then it's kind of a must purchase. But if you weren't, you're essentially buying the same songs again. So I kind of waffled.

Then I saw the track listing, and it was quite varied. Went into the ancient days of Pink Floyd (60's era), and hit the usual Floyd hits. It also had quite a few songs from his third solo album. If there was any disappointment for me, it was that there were not any tracks from David's first two solo albums - there's a lot of good stuff there (mostly on the second), but that wasn't a major deal. The selling point for me was Rick Wright. As one of the founders of Pink Floyd (Gilmour was not), it kind of felt more like a Floyd album with two of the guys there, so I pre-ordered it. Then Rick Wright died before it was released. It kind of turned into a tribute because of that.

The music itself was quite good. It was recorded on the final date of the tour for his On an Island album. It was in Gdansk Poland - in the shipyards made famous by Lech Walensa (sp?). The track selection was pretty good, had some stuff I was not expecting (Astronomy Domine, Echoes!), and I did enjoy hearing live version of his third solo album. So yeah, I enjoyed it. I'm not terribly sure it's for everyone though. This does have a unique feel in that there's an orchestra playing. Lots of bands do that now, but this seems to fit the music more than most bands who just go "Oh, here's an orchestra, too".

A bit of a note here. There were MANY different versions of the thing. David Gilmour's site details all of them, but I bought the 2 CD / 1 DVD version myself.
