 Making The World Safe for Show Tunes July 25, 2010

The bright yellow cover of the first of the multiple Glee related soundtracks in, in an ironic way, kind of funny. Since most cheese is some variety of yellow in color, and Glee is the ultimate in musical cheese, then Yellow would be appropriate. But then again, there is Velveetea and then there is Calvados. One is processed product, the later is super fine and rich, delightful cheese. "Glee" falls closer to the higher end version than the stuff you get in the dairy fridge at the local Piggly Wiggly.
There was a time when pop music and classic popcraft went hand in hand. The Beatles, The Jackson 5, Three Dog Night, all took assorted Broadway songs and mixed them with pop and rock. The Beatles did "Till There Was You," The Jackson's did "Corner Of The Sky," Three Dog Night took on "Easy To Be Hard" from "Hair." After a couple decades, that seemed to be too square. Until The Who decided to turn "Tommy" into a Broadway musical - and now Green Day actually winning Tony Awards for "American Idiot" (!?!?), Broadway and modern rock/pop travelled very separate pathways.
Glee takes that notion and upends it completely. I was pretty much expecting good fun from the likes of the Journey and Heart covers, but was really pleased by the likes of "Maybe This Time" from "Cabaret" and "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked." And while not everything here works ("Sweet Caroline" and "Bust A Move" in particular), the bulk of this makes for enjoyable listening.

I was captivated by the very first show, especially the cover of Journey's Don't Stop Believin'. Our entire family loves the music. I especially like the fact that the glee version of some songs are not as explicit as the original versions, and that I can enjoy the music (such as Gold Digger) with my children without being embarrassed!

The Best Covers Ever June 8, 2010

Glee, the highly appraised series, finally releases its first collection of songs. This collection contains songs from Episodes 1-5 and 7-9, as no songs from episode 6 are found on this cd. If you've been buying the songs week by week, then this album does nothing for you. However for the major gleek, like myself, you won't mind at all buying these covers again.
1) Don't Stop Believin' 10/10 This song revolutionized the perfect cover song, and it made the whole world fall in love with Glee!
2) Can't Fight This Feeling 7/10 Out of the entire cast, Cory Monteith is very inconsistent. Sometimes he's great, and other times he misses the mark. This song isn't quite terrible, but his performance is very forgettable.
3) Gold Digger 7/10 After Amber Riley blew the opening away, Matthew Morrison shows off his embarrassing rapping skills.
4) Take a Bow 9/10 Lea Michele is by far the best singer and Glee, and the crew knows that. She has amazing control over her voice, and her pitch is perfect.
5) Bust Your Windows 9/10 A very sassy Mercedes (Amber Riley) number.
6) Taking Chances 10/10 Wow, I'm speechless after this performance. Rachel (Lea Michele) absolutely nailed this song and made it way better than the original.
7) Alone 10/10 Will (Matthew Morrison) and April (Kristen Chenoweth) match their voices perfectly. Neither singer overpowers the other.
8) Maybe this Time 10/10 Amazing Duet between two extraordinarily talented Broadway performers.
9) Somebody to Love 10/10 The classic Queen song gets revamped to a beautiful-crafted song. The song truly deserves a standing ovation.
10) Hate on Me 8/10 In terms of technique and performance, there isn't anything really wrong with the song. However, there are much better songs on this album.
11) No Air 8/10 Not one of the stronger duets of Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele), but it does its job. Finn (Cory Monteith) sounds way too robotic here.
12) You Keep Me Hanging On 6/10 Quinn (Dianna Agron) has a sweet voice, but she can't carry a whole song. The song gets boring incredibly fast.
13) Keep Holding On 10/10 Compared to Avril's version, this surpassed it by far. This version is more powerful and inspirational!
14) Bust a Move 8/10 Even though Will (Matthew Morrison) does not rap well, his personality definitely shined more than in Gold Digger
15) Sweet Caroline 8/10 Without the visual, the song is too short to be memorable. However Puck (Mark Salling) has a way better voice than Finn (Cory Monteith)
16) Dancing with Myself 7/10 Honestly, Artie (Kevin McHale) has a wonderful voice. However, this song and performance is very forgettable.
17) Defying Gravity 10/10 Rachel (Lea Michele) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) make this Broadway hit their own. An absolute great way to end the first album

18) I Wanna Sex You Up 7/10 Much like Sweet Caroline, without the visuals the song really loses it's coolness.
19) I Could Have Danced All Night 9/10 Who knew that Emma (Jayma Mays) has an incredible voice. The song is graceful and sweet.
20) Leavin' on a Jet Plane 5/10 So if Will (Matthew Morrison) isn't rapping, we get to hear him sing these boring mellow songs. After hearing this song, there's no doubt why this song was cut from the original pilot.
Itunes Exclusives
21) I Say a Little Prayer 8/10 Quinn (Dianna Agron) sounded way better here than in You Keep Me Hanging On. Much more energy and spunk.
The Walmart Edition has karaoke tracks to Take a Bow, Gold Digger, and Somebody to Love. It would have made more sense to include Don't Stop Believin', but the karaoke tracks are always fun to listen to.
Overall, Glee has scored big with their first album. With some of the best covers ever recorded, how could one go wrong? Buy this album and see why the world loves Glee
