1 out of 5 stars '' Nothing like the old school''   September 5, 2010

Drake just came out of no where with music. When I first heard his album it sounded ok, but he does not have any life in his songs. All these rapper nowadays talk about is women, clothes, cars, jewelery and how much weed they smoke.Never have nothing positive to say in their songs. Something positive like thats going to uplift you with wisdom, understanding about life and this world we live in. This rapper obviously has the wrong ingredients in his songs. Rappers like lil' wayne is so horrible to listen to, because Half the time when lil wayne raps it sound like he's having someone baby in serious pain. He makes horrible sounds in his songs when he raps, I can't make out what he saying.
These rappers of today is making money way to easy with all this B.S. music. Things are not the same in hiphop anymore, they are tearing hiphop up to pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally honest, Lyrically deep and one of the best hip-hop albums of the year.   September 4, 2010

I don't know why everybody is hating on Drake. He is not only really talented, but this album can speak to people on many levels. He poured his heart out in every song and left it there. Definitely a great contribution to hip-hop, which is hanging on by a thread, and along with Nicki Minaj and Jay-Z, is keeping hip-hop alive. The songs are so well made, even though a few are slow and bland, but every song contains great lyrics and they work great as singles. Drake has a lyrical style that is untraditional to the standard hip-hop from the 90s, but it works and it's great. I think Drake has a great career ahead of him as a rapper, and his talent is evident in this remarkable debut album.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty mainstream, but not terrible   August 29, 2010
Cemetary (Southern Cali)
This isnt an awful CD. Theres a couple pretty good beats that stand out, and some good verses and guest spots. I dont get why everyone calls him fake. Its not like he's rapping about selling drugs and killing people, he talks about your usual stuff, money, women. Its nothing groundbreaking, but its not fake, by any means. theres some clever lines here and there, but its nothing special

a break from crack lyrics and gangsta music

more grown up music its kinda of a blend of r&B do not sleep on thz guy!!!
The guy is lyrical more of a kanye west style with a blend of of old fashion hip hop.. just lyrics and flow not bashing females or talking about selling dope or bling.. original that is y i listen to thz guy

If you wasn't a Drake fan (circa 06) I kinda feel bad for you. When he dropped his mixtape Room for Improvement...*One* of the best mixtapes I've ever listened to handsdown. And then he dropped Comeback Season which was dope, equal to RFI. When the EP came out, I got the mixtape version which is where it started to sound a little watered down, despite the hype of Best I ever Had, but still it had some high points.

And then there was Thank Me Later. I can't say that it's all bad. Generally speaking, I like it. It just doesn't have that classic, energized hungry sound that his first two mixtape had. That annoying Lil Waynish twang in his voice kinda gets to me, and he's starting to sound like a Wayne bi-product. I honestly don't mind the singing so much because it doesn't overpower the album. I don't know it just some of it sounded a little lazy. Some noteworthy songs on this were (IMO):

1 Fireworks
5 Show Me a Good Time
7 Fancy
11 Miss Me
12 Cece's Interlude (mostly singing but I still like)
13 Find Your Love
14 Thank Me Now

Oh yeah, the 2nd track Karaoke is cool too. Real laid back. Although, it kind of sounds like something Sade would sing. (Just a thought)

The rest of it was ok, just kinda filler-ish to me. i.e. Light Up, demonstrates the difference between good and great=Drake & Jay-Z(#8 Shut It Down was a long, weird, annoying r&b joint, didn't like at all) Anyway, still worth buying. If I could, I'd give it a 3.5

I'll be anticipating album #2.
